This is a great question with many answers. Lack of consistency is one big reason. Consider that societies or other groups have social norms. If a person does not participate in various micro-interactions, they do not support the social structure.
For example, there are places where people greet each other; places where others are not. You don’t have to follow local customs, but if you refuse, you send a clear message that you don’t want to belong. The group is practically, subtly, being rejected.
Consider this behavior in a workgroup scenario as well. People develop social rituals that are seen to improve everyone’s day as well as their work output. If a person benefits but does not contribute, negative feelings may arise. Also, if a person is too far from the norm, it can make people nervous.
In terms of psychology, presenting a blank slate invites people to project onto you and fill in the blanks in other ways. A person can be a quiet introvert. Next thing you know they are being called rude, snobby, unfriendly, etc.
If you’re a quiet person and want to be ignored, consider a short nod, a small smile, a simple “hello” or “thank you.” Being a Mars Libra, I take these actions and avoid hatred.
