A recent study by Mark Blagrove and colleagues at Swansea University in the UK AI The system provided dream interpretations that participants rated as “moderately accurate and provide some personal insight.” (105) Participants answered the Dream Interpretation Questionnaire (GDI), which was then compared to the responses of participants in previous live dream interpretation studies. therapy and groups. Using the ChatGPT system, participants in this study rated the interpretations lower on the exploration-insight subscale, which captures the levels of waking life relevance emphasized in the interpretation. Nevertheless, Blagrove et al. “The mean rating of GDI item 1 (“My dream was explored in depth by ChatGPT’s interpretation”) was 7.90 on a scale of 1-9, indicating that participants were very thorough with the process.” (111)
This study provides preliminary evidence to support the development of more finely calibrated AI tools for dream interpretation. However, several concerns and limitations must be addressed first.
What is missing from AI Dream Interpretation?
Blagrove and his colleagues noted the limits of their learning in a minimalist input/output process, where participants simply enter their dreams (and evoke life details and associations) and receive the AI’s response. There was none of the extended dialogue and exploration that usually occurs in live dream interpretation. But even if this process can be extended by a series of interactive responses between the dreamer and the AI system, the main aspects of dream interpretation are still excluded. In a thoughtful review of the article by Blagrove et al. Leslie Ellis points out
“A dream group or therapy session does more than provide accurate interpretation. The real work is holding the image long enough for the body to respond, hearing how the phrase sounds in the other person’s ears, and noticing what changes when the dreamer is dreaming. feeling called out loud. It’s a back-and-forth involving silence, breathing, and the small adjustments people make when something feels right.
These qualities are embodied existence and sympathetic The sensibility emphasized by Ellis seems even beyond its limits optimistic Visions of AI.
I would add that an essential element of the best, most dynamic forms of vivid dream interpretation is a willingness, even eagerness, to speak and speak frankly of hard truths, critical thoughts, and taboo subjects. Current AI models, such as ChatGPT, are limited by a variety of internal and non-public features. boundaries around controversial topics, meaning that attempts to use these systems to fully interpret human experience may be impossible with dreams containing certain types of content (e.g. sexualracial/ethnic, political) and may lead to a subtle homogenization of all AI interpretations in general. Where dreams are most dramatic and interesting is where current AI systems are barred from responding.
Where can AI dream interpretation go from here?
Several new opportunities for research on this topic, as well as new opportunities to apply these concepts in practical contexts of therapy, educationand public welfare. The greatest gains are likely to come from projects that pursue the following paths:
- Experimenting with AI systems other than ChatGPT, systems trained with higher ethical standards and more tailored to dream interpretation purposes. There are more and more of these systems, and some of them may offer better sources for dream interpretation. Ultimately, the best systems are built on a foundation of focused, systematic training with large sets of high-quality dream data.
- Developing more detailed and nuanced advice for AI systems beyond simply asking them “What does this dream mean?” or “What is A Freudian the interpretation of this dream? Writing effective proposals for AI systems is emerging 21St century art form, a kind of linguistic neo-magic that can make a big difference to the results of research in the field.
- Broadening the interpretive lens. As with live dream groups, AI systems can provide a wide range of interpretations by listening to people’s different perspectives. For example, Elsewhere.to, the dream journal app I help manage, currently offers ten different interpretations, from Jungian and Lacanian to Biblical and Astrological. Giving people access to a variety of perspectives allows them to trust their own judgment and determine the best understanding of their dreams given the various possibilities. It may even spark a new interest in learning more from real people who are experts in these approaches.
- Differentiate between situations where people can benefit from live therapy and group dream interpretation and situations where they can benefit from AI interpretation. For example, a very rich and memorable dream, which Jung calls a “big dream,” would certainly benefit from a deep, extended study of a vivid interpretation in therapy or a group. For other dreams that don’t take the time or effort to interpret live, but still contain valid and meaningful insights, an AI interpretation system can offer a useful approach.
Caution is certainly needed in this area, but so is a reasonable sense of hope. At best, artificial intelligence systems will radically expand the use of many high-quality methods of dream interpretation. This should be cause for optimism among those who believe in the benefits of public awareness to dream. Rather than replacing therapists or groups, AI dream interpretation tools can augment their efforts, connect them to new resources, and ultimately guide them in deeper directions of meaning that only humans can.
