The Psychology of Dating: What Really Works

Many people think that they will succeed flirting depends on trust, attractivenessor a great assembly line; however, research shows that the reality is quite different.

Researchers evaluated nearly 1,000 participants (from the US and Norway) to determine which flirting methods were most successful (Kennair et al., 2022).

Researchers have been surprised to learn that the most successful methods of flirting are not based on physical attraction, confidence or the right delivery of words. Instead, it has to do with how our minds work when judging the attractiveness of others.

Your brain makes the decision before you

When you meet someone for the first time, the first few minutes of that meeting are more important than most people think.

Before you make a conscious decision whether you like this person or not, your brain starts asking a few questions.

Can I trust this person?

Do they understand me?

Can I feel comfortable around them?

Would I enjoy spending more time with them?

Most of these processes happen automatically. With every moment of interaction—whether it’s a smile, a look, or an awkward pause—your brain is gathering information without you knowing what it’s doing.

Researchers have concluded that smiling and eye contact are key contributors to successful flirting (Kennair et al., 2022). These simple behaviors convey warmth and openness Before the actual conversation. Showing that your brain is only looking for connection, not perfection.

However, there was one way of flirting that was more highly rated and had nothing to do with non-verbal behavior.

What did the scientists find?

Many people think of flirting as a way of trying to excite someone or get attention. They do things to stand out, look good and look perfect. But researchers disagree about how successful the trick is.

According to a study conducted by researchers worldwide (Kennair et al., 2022), those who have the greatest influence on others are not those who try to show off; they are the ones who create a shared emotional experience with those they are trying to flirt with.

Thousands of respondents from Norway and the United States participated in this study. Researchers asked nearly 1,000 people to rate a list of 40 different forms of flirting and rank them as best for short-term and long-term relationships (Kennair et al., 2022).

The results of this large study showed that the best flirting is insecurity (in any form); dress attractively (in any form); or crafting the perfect opening line — instead, researchers have found that it’s the best way to flirt and build a bridge with another person. a joke followed by a warm smile and eye contact (Kennair et al., 2022).

At first, given the simplicity of the answer, few people believe this action until they know it for sure laughing works in our brain.

The Neuroscience of Flirting

The power of humor lies not in its entertainment value; It lies in the ability to establish a connection between two people. When two people laugh together, they feel the same way feeling in concert for a short time.

Psychologists call this phenomenon emotional synchronicityor the simultaneous response of two brains to an external stimulus. Ultimately, the chemistry between two individuals is formed by this shared emotional experience.

In addition to creating connections, humor has social value intelligenceemotional sensitivity and understanding of another’s point of view. Therefore, when one person laughs at another’s joke, they can say very well what many words cannot say: “I belong to you.” Feeling understood is one of the most powerful ways to create a sense of connection in people.

Communicate, together

The ability to communicate is not something that people have or don’t have. The research in this study shows that chemistry is not a magical stroke of luck, but the result of many small, individual interactions between two people: a smile, warm eye contact, a sense of hearing, and a good laugh.

The individual moments of interaction that contribute to human connection do not guarantee this attraction develop, they create the right conditions for the development of attractiveness.

This research focuses primarily on developing chemistry through flirting; however, it also showed how people form strong human bonds. The people we remember as the most attractive, stylish or confident are usually the ones who make us feel completely comfortable.

Because the real purpose of flirting is to establish a connection between two people. By flirting, we build a bridge to the other person that allows them to feel safe.

Because the best flirting isn’t impressing the other person. It’s about creating a connection that allows two brains to make decisions: I love who I am when I’m with you.
