In episode 419, astrologer Kenneth Johnson joins the show to talk about the Mayan calendar and Mesoamerican astrology, the indigenous astrology of ancient Mexico and Central America.
During the episode we will talk about the development of astronomy and astrology in the Mayan and other Mesoamerican cultures before the arrival of the Europeans, many of whose written documents were destroyed during the Spanish conquest in the 16th century.
Kenneth explains how Mesoamerican cultures had complex and highly precise astronomically based calendars and how they were linked to a widespread belief in astrology, conceptualized as a connection and reflection between heaven and earth.
One of the main features of Mayan astrology was the tracking of the cycles of Venus, as well as the development of a 260-day sacred calendar of 13 numbers and 20 day signs used for astrological purposes.
In a later section, we’ll talk about what happened to some of the Western misunderstandings about the Mayan calendar ending in 2012, and how to view time in terms of endless cycles.
Finally, the last point we touch on is the recent revival and expansion of Mayan astrology and how the new system has grown and developed over the past 30 years.
