A forced synastry chart can force you to explain the entire relationship in terms of Moon-Pluto. Resist that impulse. Learning to learn synastry well means keeping symbolism, lived experience, and personal choice together. The diagram describes the quality of communication between two people. It does not replace their stories, consent, communication skills, or ability to develop.
Synastry is one of the most meaningful and demanding topics in astrology, because it asks for the reading of two complete people at the same time. A thoughtful approach will give you more than just a list of dos and don’ts. It will help you understand where relationships come easily, where they require maturity, and why some relationships leave a lasting impression.
Create a baseline before comparing charts
Synastry relies on natal astrology. Before comparing two charts, you can read each chart independently with reasonable confidence. Determine the person’s chart line, luminaries, angle planets, major aspects and positions of Venus, Mars and Moon. It determines what each person brings to the relationship before they enter the picture.
For example, a person with Saturn conjunct his natal Venus may already approach intimacy with caution, loyalty, seriousness, or fear of rejection. Ask what you are actually learning. Are you looking for a new attraction, long-term partnership, friendship, family relationship or professional partnership? The same aspect can be expressed differently depending on the relationship container.
A Venus-Mars conjunction can describe romantic magnetism in a dating relationship, creative passion between partners, or loving vitality between friends. Synastry is more beneficial if you avoid forcing each sign into a romantic script.
How to learn synastry step by step
Start with the broadest patterns, then move on to the details. This dramatic subplot prevents you from distracting from the central story of the chart.
First, compare the luminaries. Contact with the Sun speaks of individuality, vitality, and the way each person recognizes the essential expression of the other. Connections with the Moon often reveal rhythms of emotional familiarity, instinctive responses, and caring. Sun-Moon aspects can be especially meaningful because they bring conscious purpose and emotional needs into communication.
Next, study the personal planets. Mercury shows how people think, speak, listen and misunderstand each other. Venus represents affection, values, pleasure and attitude. Their Moon in your fourth house can evoke a sense of home, family, vulnerability, or emotional history. Their Mercury in your third house can encourage everyday conversation and learning. These overlays become more apparent when you connect them to aspects and natal chart themes.
The eighth and twelfth houses deserve a careful, non-romantic interpretation. Eighth house overlays can include intimacy, shared resources, trust, fear, and psychological depth. Twelfth house overlays can suggest compassion, spiritual resonance, personal feelings, blind spots, sacrifices, or confusion. Neither house guarantees a fateful relationship. Both require clear boundaries and a willingness to name what is hard to see.
Look for recurring themes
A mature synastry reading is built from patterns. If you see only one difficult aspect, do not interpret it completely. Instead, ask what is repeated in the comparison chart.
There are probably a few Mercury connections, a third house emphasis, and a strong Gemini or Virgo signature. Communication is perhaps central to the purpose and development of a relationship. Perhaps Saturn touches the Moon, Venus and the angle. Commitment, time, responsibility, and emotional safety can be recurring lessons. A recurring theme usually gets more exposure than any single posting.
Diagram synthesis is also important here. Notice whether supportive factors help the couple work through the difficult ones. A Moon-Saturn square can be difficult, but loving Mercury connections allow for difficult conversations.
