The only way to overcome pain is to face it, embrace it, embrace it, and learn the lessons embedded within it.
– Adele Theron

What is emotional trauma?

Emotional trauma occurs when you are faced with a very extreme situation (e.g. terrible betrayal by a loved onesomeone’s suicide, etc.) body, heart and mind struggle for control strong emotions that come with such an amazing experience.
As a result, the body-mind system tends to enter a freezing conditioncharacterized by the feelings of insomnia, detachment from reality, and the sudden or eventual onset of severe symptoms such as chronic anxiety, depression, addiction, PTSD, or other life-disrupting conditions.

Four components of trauma

Trauma is not something that happens to us. But what if we don’t have a sympathetic witness.
– Peter A Levine, PhD
According to psychotherapist and pioneer of Somatic Experiencing®, Peter LevineThere are four aspects of trauma that all traumatized people share to some extent:
- Extreme excitement (ie being overly alert and cautious)
- Compression (i.e. tense body)
- Dissociation (i.e. disconnection from the here and now)
- Freezing (inactivity), associated with a feeling of helplessness
I use these four components of trauma as the basis for the emotional trauma test below.
Emotional trauma, inner workings, and mental well-being

Determining our level of emotional trauma is an important part of our inner work, which is:
… psychological and spiritual practice a deep dive into yourself for the purposes of self-exploration, self-awareness, healing, and spiritual transformation.
When we work to heal, resolve, or integrate trauma, a large amount of internal energy is released, it allows us to grow and blossom in ways that are unimaginably beautiful and profound.
Thus, healing emotional trauma is an important part of our awakening journey Soul work as lone wolves and seekers of our true path in life.
We often begin this healing quest step by step five and six of the journey of the spiritual traveler.
