Episode 287 features a lecture by Chris Brennan on the concept of acceptance in traditional astrology and how it can be used as a powerful mitigating factor in interpreting a birth chart.
Generally, reception occurs when one planet is placed in a sign ruled by another planet and the sign’s ruler aspects the visiting planet.
Since the zodiac signs were originally conceptualized as the houses or residences of the planets, reception is conceptualized as what happens when the host planet welcomes and supports guests in its house.
Medieval astrologers often saw reception as a powerful mitigating factor, which could make benefics more positive or, alternatively, make the difficult aspects of malefics more constructive.
In the first part of the lecture I will talk about the history and philosophy of this concept, and in the second half I will present a series of modern table examples to show how the technique works in practice.
