In episode 313, astrologer Luis Ribeiro joins the show to explain the astronomy and mathematics behind the calculation of different house division patterns in Western astrology.
We begin with a historical timeline showing when some of the different forms of housing subdivisions originated, who mentioned them in the earliest sources, and when they peaked in popularity.
We then move on to a detailed breakdown of the astronomy and mathematics behind how some of the most popular forms of house distribution are calculated.
In particular, we will focus on the rationale for whole-sign houses, equal houses, porphyry houses, Alkabitius, Campanus, Regiomantanus, and Placidus.
Our goal was not to promote any system or to talk about which one is better to use in practice, but to help astrologers understand how wells are divided according to each approach.
At the end of the episode, we have a section where we talk about an astronomical instrument called an astrolabe and show how medieval astrologers used it to calculate the ascendant, midheaven and other intermediate house cusp.
