In episode 324, astrologer Luis Ribeiro joins me to talk about the life and work of his partner, Helena Avelar, who died earlier this year.
Elena was a well-known Portuguese practitioner and teacher of traditional astrology and has influenced many astrologers through her co-authored works with Luis, such as the 2010 book. On the Celestial Spheres: A Treatise on Traditional Astrology.
He is also a scholar of the history of astrology and received his PhD from the Warburg Institute in 2018 with a thesis entitled “The Making of Astrology in Fifteenth-Century France. The Notebooks of S. Belle: Lisbon, MS 1711 and Paris, NAL 398”.
His PhD thesis was recently published by the academic publisher Brill, and the book was published under his name a few months after his death. Notebooks of S. Belle, an astrologer working in France in the late Middle Ages.
In the first half of this podcast episode we will give a biographical overview of Helena’s life and talk about her work and achievements, and in the second half we will talk about her new book.
