A clear new moon: Wednesday, March 18, 2026 at 9:24 PM ET
The sun Pisces at 28° | Moon 28 ° In Pisces
When I look at the chart for today’s new moon, a few qualities stand out, clearly demarcated. The word liminal means “between” or “existing on the threshold.” It gives the feeling of passing through the door from one state to another – the end of one chapter and the beginning of the next.
Liminal spaces can also feel like limbo—neither here nor there. On the positive side, it can open the door to rare opportunities, potential, and healing insights. However, difficulties may include confusion, uncertainty, or lack of self-control.
The following qualities of today’s new moon chart reflect this sense of limitation:

Mercury as liminal navigator
The archetypal energy of Mercury (also known as Hermes) is primarily liminal.
As the messenger god, Mercury is the only deity who can travel freely between all the worlds – the underworld, the underworld, and the realm of the gods. Another borderline quality of Mercury is that this role exists as the exception to the rule. The restrictions that other gods must observe, such as not freely traveling to the underworld, do not apply to Mercury.
Today’s new moon in Pisces also signals the approaching phase of Mercury retrograde. Mercury is mostly located around 8 degrees and goes direct on March 20th. The notion of stationary—neither forward nor backward—is itself another reflection of limitation.
Adding to this theme, Mercury is in the watery, mutable sign of Pisces. Although Pisces is not inherently liminal, it is known for its fluid, flexible and not-so-easy way of working.

How can we manage liminality?
For some, this in-between space can feel soothing, dreamy, or even therapeutic. In February and March 2026, as we closely associate the potentially confusing influence of Saturn and Neptune with Mercury retrograde in Pisces, many signals point to trust, confidence, surrender and looking beyond appearances.
This can be difficult when we ignore symbolic messages or lessons that are asking for our attention. For example, if you have a very rigid agenda around a particular plan or event and unexpected obstacles arise, resisting those changes can only lead to greater frustration and complications. Allowing yourself to change plans and move on to something different than what was originally expected can lead to greater adaptation in the end.
In a way, it’s like keeping an internal compass, being open to how the actual journey unfolds.
Some might call it staying centered in the face of inevitable change.
Make the most of this moment
Remember that this is a temporary time. As Aries season approaches, with several planets entering Aries soon and Saturn rapidly separating from Neptune, we can feel a significant increase in forward movement and activity until we reach the full moon in Libra in about two weeks.
If you can offer yourself some relief and non-judgment during this time, this period can become a deeply healing and nurturing opportunity.
