In episode 435, Dr. José Manuel Redondo joins the show to discuss the life and work of the 5th century philosopher Proclus and how he combined astrology and theurgy with Platonism.
Jose is an astrologer from Mexico City who wrote his PhD on Proclus in 2015. We met at an astrology conference in 2010 and have been talking about doing an episode about Proclus for years.
After last month An episode on the lot As I touch on Plato, the myth of the Earth, and the concept of the Guardian Daimon, I thought it would be a great time to talk with José about Proclus and expand on some points by expanding the discussion of Platonism. Timaeus and other Platonic metaphysics.
During the episode, we talk about Proclus and how he used astrology in conjunction with theurgy as a means of working with the gods and invoking them in his daily life, and we touch on a number of other topics in the process, including:
- It is called Plato’s myth of creation Timaeusand he points out how the universe is a living being and a god with soul and mind, and how some later astrologers may have been influenced by this and shared a similar conception of the cosmos.
- How did Plato’s concept of reincarnation in the Timaeus and the Earth myth influence later astrologers and philosophers such as Proclus.
- Plato’s idea of fate is a law that is conditional and allows for choice.
- The role of the daimon in Proclus and other Platonists and the question of whether it is an internal or external entity that guides the natives to fulfill their destiny.
- Proclus’s birth chart, preserved in his biography by his disciple Marinus, also states that eclipses occurred at the time of his disciple Proclus’ death.
- How Platonic metaphysics was integrated with astrology is part of what led to the fall of the Roman Empire after it became Christian, and how some Platonic concepts of daimons or the animosity of the cosmos conflicted with Christian theology.
And many other topics.
